For the past six months, three awesome, hard-working RNs from our campaign have been participating in Governor Ritter's Nurse Workforce & Patient Care Task Force.

These committed RNs, along with other members of the Governor's Task Force, have been charged with putting forth recommendations for improving healthcare in Colorado. These recommendations will shape upcoming legislation, from everything like ensuring an equal voice for nurses in our hospitals to transparency in reporting-making information on staffing, turnover and other quality indicators transparent to patients and families, as well as nurses, so that can make informed decisions about where they go for care and where they choose to work.

As you can imagine, not everyone on the Task Force agrees with one another. Our nurses are working side-by-side with hospital administrators, insurance industry representatives and elected officials.

The hospital administrators may have connections and clout, but we have something far more valuable - and that's YOU. Real nurses on the frontlines of healthcare in Colorado. The Governor wants to hear from all of us, and I hope you'll join in.

A growing body of evidence confirms what nurses know firsthand - higher staffing levels improve patient care and reduce tens of thousands of preventable injuries, infections, and deaths in hospitals each year.

Here are the facts:

* Patients have a 31 percent greater risk of dying in hospitals where nurses on the med/surg floor care for eight patients, instead of four. (Journal of American Medical Association, Aiken, 10/02)

* Patient infections would be reduced by more than 1/4 in critical care units when nurses care for two patients at a time. (Critical Care Medicine, Hugonnet, 01/07)

* Understaffed and overworked, RNs are being driven from the bedside.  Nearly ? a million left the profession in 2004.  (HRSA, 03/04)
